Instructions
Step 1. Prepare the Syrup:
- Combine sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in lemon juice and orange blossom water (if using). Let cool completely.
Step 2. Prepare Nuts:
- In a bowl, mix chopped pistachios/walnuts with cinnamon (if using).
Step 3. Assemble Baklava:
- Brush a 9×13-inch baking pan with melted butter. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the pan, brush with butter. Repeat for about 8-10 layers.
- Spread half of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo.
- Add another 5-6 layers of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
- Spread the remaining nut mixture.
- Top with the remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter. For the top layer, ensure it’s generously buttered.
Step 4. Cut Baklava:
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
Step 5. Bake:
- Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
Step 6. Pour Syrup:
- Immediately after removing from the oven, slowly pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot baklava. The baklava will sizzle and absorb the syrup.
Step 7. Cool & Serve:
- Let the baklava cool completely for several hours or overnight before serving.
